I’m very proud of the cast and crew that Johnny and I assembled for our new short film, Pastime. As a director going into a project, there is always some uneasiness, wondering how everyone will be able to handle their tasks, especially if their job is new for them. Once production begins (in this case we shot for just 8 days), there is very little opportunity to bring on entirely new people or shift roles in any significant way. So you try to create an environment where everyone is empowered to learn new things and do their best work, you pour your attention into the people you have, and you trust them to succeed.
Needless to say, everyone surpassed my highest expectations. Even on the first day, when many crew members only had a general idea of their role on set, they did a fantastic job. They kept an open mind to learn as much as they could at the beginning, and before long everyone was proactively performing their tasks with little or no direction. The actors always came prepared, and often they performed incredibly well on the very first take of a scene. Subsequent takes gave them the opportunity to try a different nuances in their performance, refine the blocking of the scene, or develop more natural chemistry with the other actors in the scene.
In this fourth featurette, the cast and crew talks about what it was like to work with the rest of the team…and you’ll get to see everyone in action in some fantastic behind-the-scenes photos from production week.
