About a year ago, my friend Johnny Sikma and I decided we wanted to make a film together. For both of us, the beating heart of a film, the most important part, is the story. Acting, cinematography, editing — all these things are vitally important. But none of it matters without a great story. (As a filmmaker, I don’t think there would be anything worse than spending months making a visual masterpiece only to realize your story wasn’t worth telling.)
In filmmaking, of course, the story is manifested in a written asset called the screenplay. So Johnny and I set out to write one.
We learned that writing is a journey. It’s a hard journey with twists and turns and hard decisions. Indeed, if you’ve gone the wrong way, the quickest way forward is to turn back and start again. We did all that and more on the journey of writing Pastime, our new short film. We’d like to show you all about it in our new video below.
