In this episode of the Moving Projects webcast, singer/songwriter Joel Ansett discusses the joys and challenges of creating great music.
This webcast originally aired on Thursday, December 4, 2014, at 8:00 PM EST. You can watch it right here.
Who is Joel?
Joel Ansett is a singer/songwriter from Spokane, WA. He studied History at Grove City College outside of Pittsburgh, PA, and upon graduating in 2012 he decided to take a risk and pursue a career in music. Ever since then, the musical doors have continued to open for Joel. He released a 6-song EP in November of 2012, and since then he has released 4 studio singles, all of which have been met with more opportunities to write and perform. After finishing a nationwide tour in the summer of 2014, Joel and his wife Molly moved to Denver, CO. Joel is currently the Music and Arts Director of St. Patrick Presbyterian in downtown Denver. Part of his job description is to write and record songs that will bless the city of Denver, and to that end he is in the middle of fundraising for his first full length album. Music aside, Joel loves his wife, mountains, lemonade, and college basketball. His creative mission statement is to “tell the Truth, but tell it slant.”

I’m a songwriter/arranger and I’m currently diving fully into using strings in my recordings, and suggesting it for others I collaborate with. I’ve recorded a few songs so far with string-playing friends and I want to develop that skill-set even more. On your Living Room EP I noticed quite a bit of cello spread throughout and even some violin. It sounds great!
Can you speak a little about how you went about implementing strings for that EP (or how you would going forward)? For example, were strings in your mind from the start? Did you write a specific arrangement, or leave it up to a good string player to improvise the parts etc…And are there any tips on how to get a great string recording/arrangement, or things to avoid?
Thanks, –Andrew

Thanks for the question, Andrew! We’ll talk about this on the webcast tonight.
Thank you! This was great.
First of all I want to say that the EP songs are the best songs that I know, especially Known and Loved. Now moving to my question how is the album coming along? Do you have any sneak peeks for the new songs because I cannot wait?
Hi Joel! My name is Shannon and we’ve talked before, mainly about the art lyrics reveal about a year ago. I actually drew a couple interpretations of lyrics for you- the way you write inspires me daily and I just want to thank you for making incredible music. Do you plan on working with any other artists in the future or making a collaboration with someone else? I’m looking forward to everything in the future!! Thanks again, Shannon.
Nate you are a legend! Keep on doing awesome things and being such a huge encouragement to people with passion! Joel, you already know…
